Bringing Your Dog or Cat to Thailand — Import Requirements 2025
Thailand does not have a mandatory quarantine requirement for pets from most countries, which is why it is popular for expats relocating with animals. But the document chain is specific and must be prepared well in advance — missing a requirement means your pet cannot board the flight or is detained on arrival. Here is the complete process for 2025.

IS THERE QUARANTINE IN THAILAND?
Thailand does not have a mandatory quarantine period for dogs and cats arriving from most countries, including Australia, the UK, Europe, and the USA, if the documentation is complete and correct. On arrival, your pet is inspected by the Department of Livestock Development (DLD) officer at the airport.
If documents are incomplete or incorrect, the pet may be quarantined at the airport at your expense until the issue is resolved. This is avoidable with proper preparation.
REQUIRED DOCUMENTS FOR ALL PETS (DOGS AND CATS)
1. MICROCHIP
Your pet must have an ISO 11784/11785 compliant microchip (15-digit). The microchip must be implanted BEFORE any vaccinations on the official health certificate. If not, the certificate may be invalidated.
2. RABIES VACCINATION
Must be current at the time of travel:
- Puppies/kittens under 3 months: cannot be vaccinated — check with DLD if they are eligible to enter
- Initial vaccination: must be given at least 21 days before travel (to ensure immunity)
- Booster: if your pet has had prior rabies vaccines, the most recent must be current (within the manufacturer''s recommended interval — typically 1–3 years)
3. HEALTH CERTIFICATE
Issued by a government-accredited (or licensed) veterinarian in your country within 10 days of travel (most countries) or 7 days (some requirements specify 7 days — confirm with Thai DLD). The certificate must state:
- Pet is healthy and free from infectious disease
- Microchip number (matching the chip in the pet)
- Rabies vaccination details (date, vaccine brand, expiry)
- That the animal has been in your country for the required period (Thailand requires 21+ days post-rabies vaccination)
4. GOVERNMENT ENDORSEMENT (AUSTRALIA SPECIFIC)
For Australian pets, the health certificate must be endorsed/authenticated by an Australian Government Veterinarian (AGES — Australian Government Endorsed Vet) AND by the Australian Department of Agriculture. This adds time to the process. Allow 5–10 business days for endorsement.
Australia is NOT a low-risk country for rabies — it is rabies-free, which is actually helpful. But the document authentication requirement is more complex than for some countries.
5. IMPORT PERMIT (MAY BE REQUIRED)
Thailand''s Department of Livestock Development (DLD) issues an import permit for pets. Requirements vary — for low-risk countries and small numbers of pets (1–2), the permit is often waived for personal pets, but confirm directly with the DLD Bangkok office or your airline before travel.

AIRLINE REQUIREMENTS
Most major airlines impose their own requirements for pet travel:
- Cabin (under-seat carrier): generally for cats and small dogs under 7–8 kg (including carrier). Carrier dimensions specified per airline.
- Cargo (live animal hold): for larger dogs. Must travel in IATA-compliant kennel.
- Some airlines do not accept pets on certain routes (check specifically for the route, not just the airline generally).
Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways, Thai Airways, and Cathay Pacific are commonly used for Australia-to-Thailand pet travel. Each has their own documentation and kennel requirements.
THE TIMELINE — STARTING EARLY IS CRITICAL
12+ weeks before departure: confirm microchip is present and ISO-compliant. Schedule rabies vaccination if due.
8 weeks before: begin sourcing IATA-compliant kennel if in cargo. Contact airline to confirm pet booking.
3–4 weeks before: book vet appointment for health certificate. Confirm government vet endorsement process with AGES.
10–14 days before: vet issues health certificate. Submit for government endorsement.
48 hours before: confirm all documents are endorsed and complete.
ARRIVING IN THAILAND WITH YOUR PET
On arrival at Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang, proceed through the green/red channel as applicable and present your pet''s documents to the DLD officer. The inspection is typically quick if documentation is complete. Declare your pet — do not attempt to bring it through without inspection.
VETERINARY CARE IN THAILAND
Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Phuket have good English-speaking veterinary practices. Costs are significantly lower than Australia. Emergency vet care is available 24/7 in Bangkok (Animal Hospital at Kasetsart University, BluePearl-equivalent facilities in Sukhumvit area).
TAKING YOUR PET BACK TO AUSTRALIA
Returning to Australia with your pet from Thailand is significantly more complex than arriving — Australia has strict biosecurity requirements and typically requires 10–day quarantine in Australia regardless of origin. Begin planning the return at least 3 months before departure. This is separate from the Thai import process.
