WHO THIS IS FOR
The Non-ED visa is for foreign nationals who are enrolled full-time at an eligible Thai educational institution. The key word is "eligible" — the institution must be registered with the Thai Ministry of Education or the relevant regulating body.
Eligible study types include:
• Thai language courses at registered language schools (minimum enrolment commitments apply — typically 3–6 months to qualify for the Non-ED)
• Degree programmes at Thai universities (bachelor, master, doctorate)
• Vocational and technical courses at registered Thai institutions
• Muay Thai (Thai boxing) training at registered Muay Thai academies
• Traditional Thai massage courses at registered schools
• Buddhist monastic study at recognised temples and monasteries
Not eligible: informal lessons, private tutors, unregistered online courses, hobby classes.
KEY REQUIREMENTS
• Acceptance letter or enrolment confirmation from the educational institution
• The institution must be registered and approved — your school or academy should be able to confirm their Ministry of Education or MoFA registration
• Passport (minimum 18 months validity)
• Completed Non-ED application form
• Passport photograph
• No specific financial requirement for most programmes (unlike retirement or marriage visas), though some consulates ask for proof of funds to support yourself
WHAT THE NON-ED PROVIDES
• Initial entry: 90 days on first entry under the Non-ED visa stamp
• Annual extension: extended at Immigration annually while enrolled. The extension is tied to your enrolment — you must remain actively enrolled to maintain the extension.
• Extensions are tied to the academic calendar of your institution.
ANNUAL EXTENSION
Extended at the Immigration Bureau for your province each year. Documents typically required:
• Passport
• Letter from your institution confirming continued enrolment and attendance
• TM.7 extension form
• Proof of current study (attendance records, school stamp)
• TM30 on file for your current address
• 1,900 THB fee
LANGUAGE SCHOOL NON-ED — PRACTICAL NOTES
Language school Non-ED visas have been subject to increased scrutiny over the years as some schools were used primarily as visa vehicles rather than genuine study. Immigration officers may check attendance records and may contact the school to confirm active enrolment. Genuine study is the baseline expectation.
MUAY THAI Non-ED — NOTE
Muay Thai academies that are registered and have an established relationship with Immigration can support Non-ED applications for foreign students. The academy typically provides the enrolment letter and liaises with the local Immigration office.
