Thailand Visa for Greek Nationals: Non-OA Retirement, LTR, DTV — Criminal Record Extract, ΕΦΚΑ Pension, and Everything You Need

Greece has one of the world's largest diasporas relative to its population — an estimated 5 million Greeks abroad, across Germany, Australia, the USA, the UK, South Africa, and the Gulf. For Greek professionals and retirees already established abroad, Thailand offers exceptional value at a fraction of Athens or Western European costs. This guide covers every visa route.

## Greece and Thailand: EUR, the Diaspora, and No Capital-Control Complications
Greece uses the Euro, and the capital controls imposed during the 2015 debt crisis were fully lifted by 2019 — there are no restrictions today on personal outbound EUR transfers from a Greek account.
- **Non-OA threshold:** 800,000 THB — roughly EUR 20,900, at ~38.3 THB/EUR (August 2026 rate).
Wire EUR from a Greek bank (National Bank of Greece, Alpha Bank, Eurobank, Piraeus Bank, or any SEPA bank) to a Thai bank via SWIFT, which converts to THB and issues the FET Certificate confirming foreign-sourced funds.
**For Greeks already abroad** — in Germany, Australia, the USA, the UK, South Africa, or the Gulf: fund from your local account directly. The Thai bank accepts any foreign-currency SWIFT transfer regardless of the country of origin.
**Thailand entry:** no prior visa is required for Greek passport holders visiting Thailand for tourism stays of up to 60 days — the standard exemption. (Thailand's Cabinet approved cutting this to 30 days on 19 May 2026, but the change is not yet in force — it takes effect only 15 days after Royal Gazette publication, which remains pending. 60 days is correct today.)

## Four Thailand Visa Pathways for Greek Nationals
**1. Non-OA Retirement Visa — the classic route (50+)** - Annual renewable; multiple-entry - Financial: 800,000 THB in a Thai bank account, seasoned 3 months before the annual extension, OR 65,000 THB/month income from abroad (roughly EUR 1,700 at current rates) - Health insurance: 40,000 THB outpatient + 400,000 THB inpatient minimum — two separate minimums, not a combined total - Criminal record extract + apostille required (see below) - 90-day reporting (TM47) + annual extension in Thailand
**2. Long-Term Resident (LTR) Visa — 10 years** - Wealthy Pensioner (50+): USD 80,000/year income from abroad, or USD 40,000–80,000/year combined with a USD 250,000 investment in Thailand — realistic for Greek professionals with an established diaspora income - Full exemption from Thai personal income tax on remitted overseas income under Royal Decree 743 — not a partial deduction, and not the 17% flat rate (that applies only to the separate LTR Highly-Skilled Professional category, on Thai-sourced employment income — a different benefit for a different sub-category, easy to conflate) - 10-year validity; no annual renewal; annual (not 90-day) address reporting
**3. Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) — remote workers** - 5-year validity; 180 days per entry, with one in-country extension of a further 180 days permitted - Financial requirement: a 500,000 THB bank balance (roughly EUR 13,100 at current rates) — not an income test, and required regardless of income - No police check required for the DTV — that's specific to the Non-OA route - A strong fit for Greek remote professionals and digital nomads with diaspora or international client income
**4. Thailand Privilege Card** - Five current tiers: Bronze (650,000 THB, 5-year — being withdrawn from sale 30 September 2026, after which Gold at 900,000 THB becomes the entry tier), Gold (900,000 THB, 5-year), Platinum (1,500,000 THB, 10-year), Diamond (2,500,000 THB, 15-year), Reserve (5,000,000 THB, 20-year, invitation-only) - No income or asset requirement — purchasable by anyone

## Criminal Record Extract — Ποινικό Μητρώο
For the Non-OA, you need the **Αντίγραφο Ποινικού Μητρώου** (criminal record extract), issued by the **Ministry of Justice** via the Directorate of Criminal Records.
**How to obtain it:** - **Online (gov.gr):** request via the unified digital platform using Taxisnet authentication — free of charge, typically 1–3 business days, issued digitally with an official verification QR code. - **In person:** at the Εισαγγελία Πρωτοδικών (First Instance Prosecutor's Office / Court of First Instance) in your district. - **From abroad:** the Greek Embassy or Consulate in your country of current residence, including the Greek Embassy Bangkok — confirm current consular capacity directly.
**Apostille — both Greece and Thailand are Hague members, but Thailand's own membership isn't in force yet:**
Greece was among the founding signatories of the Hague Apostille Convention itself on 5 October 1961, though domestic ratification came later — 19 March 1985, entering into force 18 May 1985. Either way, Greece's own Hague membership is genuine and long-standing. But Thailand only acceded on 30 June 2026, and it doesn't enter into force for Thailand until 28 February 2027. **The missing piece is on Thailand's side, not Greece's** — a Greek apostille alone is not yet accepted for Thai visa purposes. Until Thailand's own accession takes effect, you need the apostilled extract legalised at the Royal Thai Embassy Athens as well — confirm the current apostille competent authority and process with the Embassy before applying.

## ΕΦΚΑ Pension: What's Confirmed
**ΕΦΚΑ (e-EFKA)** is Greece's unified social security organisation, consolidating multiple former funds (including IKA-ETAM) since 2017. General retirement age is **67**, with a minimum insurance period of 15 years (4,500 days). Early retirement with a full pension is available at **62** for those with 40 years (12,000 days) of contributions.
State pensions are generally payable to Greek nationals living abroad, including Thailand, applied for online via efka.gov.gr using Taxisnet credentials. Pensioners abroad may be required to periodically confirm they're still receiving benefits (a life certificate) — confirm the current requirement directly with e-EFKA or the Greek Embassy Bangkok.
**EU pension coordination:** if you contributed to social security in Greece and another EU member state, EU Regulation 883/2004 coordinates your entitlement across both — ΕΦΚΑ handles the Greek side, which can increase your total pension compared to relying on Greek contributions alone.

## Greece–Thailand Tax
Confirm the current status and coverage of any Greece–Thailand double taxation agreement with a tax advisor before emigrating, including how pension or investment income remitted to Thailand is treated once you're a Thai tax resident (180+ days per year) under Thailand's Por 161/2566 remittance rules (effective January 2024).
---
## Greek Community in Thailand
Modest but present, concentrated in Bangkok's hospitality and business sectors, and integrated into the broader European and diaspora communities. Athens connects to Bangkok via Dubai, Doha, or Singapore (roughly 11–12 hours). The Greek Embassy Bangkok provides consular services.
---
## Property for Greek Nationals in Thailand
Foreign nationals cannot directly own Thai land (Chanote title). Options: condominiums (49% foreign-ownership quota per building, FET Certificate confirming funds wired from outside Thailand in foreign currency), leasehold land (typically structured in 30-year terms, sometimes as sequential renewals) or usufruct, or other legal structures. Nominee arrangements are illegal under the Thai Land Code. Use a certified Thai property lawyer.

Συχνές Ερωτήσεις — Έλληνες Πολίτες που Σχεδιάζουν Μετακόμιση στην Ταϊλάνδη

Πώς λαμβάνω αντίγραφο ποινικού μητρώου για την Ταϊλάνδη;

Do Greeks get visa-free entry to Thailand?

Yes — the standard 60-day tourist exemption applies to Greek passport holders, no prior visa required. (Note: Thailand's Cabinet approved cutting the standard exemption to 30 days on 19 May 2026, but this is not yet in force — it takes effect 15 days after Royal Gazette publication, which is still pending. 60 days is correct today.)

Ισχύει η ελληνική σύνταξη ΕΦΚΑ στην Ταϊλάνδη;

What is the correct bank seasoning period for the Non-OA?

3 months — 800,000 THB must be held in a Thai bank account for 3 months before the annual extension. This is the standard Thailand-wide rule and doesn't vary by nationality.

Does the DTV offer an income-based alternative to the 500,000 THB balance?

No — the DTV requires a 500,000 THB bank balance regardless of income; there's no income-based alternative. (That savings-or-income structure applies to the Non-OA — 800,000 THB savings or 65,000 THB/month income — not the DTV.)

Ισχύουν ακόμα κεφαλαιακοί έλεγχοι στην Ελλάδα;

What health coverage applies in Thailand?

Greek state healthcare (ΕΟΠΥΥ) isn't portable to Thailand for long-term non-residents. For the Non-OA, OIC-approved Thai health insurance is mandatory — 40,000 THB outpatient + 400,000 THB inpatient minimum, two separate figures, not a combined total.

How does Por 161/2566 affect Greek nationals?

From January 2024, Thailand taxes foreign-sourced income remitted for Thai tax residents (180+ days/year). Confirm current Greece-Thailand DTA status with a tax advisor before relying on treaty relief.

What is the EFKA retirement age?

General age 67, with a minimum 15 years (4,500 days) of insurance. Early retirement with a full pension is available at 62 for those with 40 years (12,000 days) of contributions.

How do I get started?

Start with the free eligibility check above. Tell us your age, financial situation (savings, income), and how long you want to stay — we identify the right visa, guide you through the criminal record extract and apostille process, and give a fixed-price quote. No obligation.

Is there a Greek community in Thailand?

Modest but present — Bangkok's hospitality and business sectors, integrated into the broader European and diaspora communities. The Greek Embassy Bangkok provides consular services.

Can Greek nationals own property in Thailand?

Foreign nationals cannot directly own Thai land. Options: condominiums (49% foreign-ownership quota per building, FET Certificate required), leasehold land or usufruct, or other legal structures — nominee arrangements are illegal. Use a certified Thai property lawyer.
