Thailand Visa for Chilean Nationals: Non-OA Retirement, LTR, DTV — Certificado de Antecedentes, Apostille, AFP Pension Abroad, and Everything You Need

Chile pioneered the individual defined-contribution pension system in 1981 — the AFP model, portable and payable from anywhere, including Thailand. Chile has been a Hague Apostille Convention member since 2016, though Thailand's own side of that process still has a step to go. This guide covers every step.

## Chile and Thailand: A Portable Pension System and a Stable Peso
The Chilean Peso (CLP) is among the more stable Latin American currencies — Chile's economy is well-managed and commodity-linked (copper), so CLP-to-THB movements are moderate compared to more volatile regional currencies. USD savings remain the recommended primary reserve for the Non-OA regardless, since Thai visa thresholds are set in THB and USD gives the most predictable conversion path.
**A longer visa-exempt window than many nationalities:** Chile has a long-standing bilateral tourism arrangement with Thailand giving Chilean passport holders **up to 90 days** visa-free entry — longer than the roughly 60 days most other nationalities receive. Thailand has separately discussed adjusting general exemption periods, so confirm the current duration before travelling rather than assuming it's fixed indefinitely.

## Four Thailand Visa Pathways for Chilean Nationals
**1. Non-OA Retirement Visa — the classic route (50+)** - Annual renewable; multiple-entry - Financial: 800,000 THB in a Thai bank account, seasoned 3 months before the annual extension, OR 65,000 THB/month income from abroad - Health insurance: 40,000 THB outpatient + 400,000 THB inpatient minimum — two separate minimums, not a combined total - Certificado de Antecedentes + current apostille/legalisation required (see below) - 90-day reporting (TM47) + annual extension in Thailand
**2. Long-Term Resident (LTR) Visa — 10 years** - Wealthy Pensioner (50+): USD 80,000/year income from abroad, or USD 40,000–80,000/year combined with a USD 250,000 investment in Thailand - Full exemption from Thai personal income tax on remitted overseas income under Royal Decree 743 — not a partial deduction, and not the 17% flat rate (that applies only to the separate LTR Highly-Skilled Professional category, on Thai-sourced employment income — a different benefit for a different sub-category, easy to conflate) - 10-year validity; no annual renewal; annual (not 90-day) address reporting
**3. Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) — remote workers** - 5-year validity; 180 days per entry, with one in-country extension of a further 180 days permitted - Financial requirement: a 500,000 THB bank balance — not an income test, and required regardless of income - No police check required for the DTV — that's specific to the Non-OA route - A strong fit for the Chilean remote-work and digital nomad cohort already established in Bangkok and Chiang Mai
**4. Thailand Privilege Card** - Five current tiers: Bronze (650,000 THB, 5-year — being withdrawn from sale 30 September 2026, after which Gold at 900,000 THB becomes the entry tier), Gold (900,000 THB, 5-year), Platinum (1,500,000 THB, 10-year), Diamond (2,500,000 THB, 15-year), Reserve (5,000,000 THB, 20-year, invitation-only) - No income or asset requirement — purchasable by anyone

## Certificado de Antecedentes: Chile's Criminal Record Certificate
For the Non-OA, you need a **Certificado de Antecedentes para Fines Particulares**, issued by the **Servicio de Registro Civil e Identificación (SRCeI / Registro Civil de Chile)**.
**How to obtain it:** - **Online (miregistrocivil.cl):** apply via the official Registro Civil portal — the certificate is issued digitally with a verification code. Confirm whether the digital version is currently accepted by Thai Immigration for the Non-OA before relying on it exclusively. - **In person:** at any Oficina del Registro Civil e Identificación in Chile. - **From Thailand:** Chileans already in-country can apply via the Chilean Consulate Bangkok — confirm current facilitation options directly.
**Apostille and legalisation for Thailand — Chile's own Hague membership is real, but it doesn't fully solve this yet:**
Chile acceded to the Hague Apostille Convention on 16 December 2015, and it entered into force for Chile on 30 August 2016. But Thailand only acceded to the Convention on 30 June 2026, and it doesn't enter into force for Thailand until 28 February 2027. **The missing piece is on Thailand's side, not Chile's** — a Chilean apostille alone is not yet accepted for Thai visa purposes. You need both steps while Thailand remains outside the Convention:
1. An apostille on your Certificado de Antecedentes from the Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores (Cancillería de Chile) — available online via tramites.gob.cl or in person in Santiago; regional Secretarías Regionales Ministeriales may also apostille documents issued in their region. 2. Legalisation of the apostilled document at the Royal Thai Embassy in Santiago — a separate step, required in addition to the apostille, not instead of it, for now.
Confirm the current requirement with the Thai Embassy Santiago before travelling, since the process is scheduled to simplify once Thailand's Convention membership takes effect on 28 February 2027.

## AFP: Chile's Pioneering Pension System, and Accessing It From Thailand
Chile's retirement system is one of the most studied in the world. In 1981, Chile became the first country to adopt a mandatory individual defined-contribution (DC) pension system (Decreto Ley 3500). The current AFP administrators are Capital, Cuprum, Habitat, Modelo, PlanVital, and ProVida.
**Your AFP account is individual and portable** — it stays in your name when you leave Chile. At retirement age (65 for men, 60 for women — confirm your current figure directly, since pension reform discussions under the Boric government have touched on this), you choose between: - **Renta vitalicia** — a lifetime annuity purchased from a life insurer, providing fixed income for life regardless of how long you live, set in UF (inflation-linked). - **Retiro programado** — a programmed withdrawal from your AFP account, with monthly amounts that fluctuate based on fund returns and remaining balance.
Both can be paid to overseas bank accounts, including in Thailand — initiate the pension process with your AFP directly and confirm current international transfer arrangements.
**Pilar Solidario (state welfare supplement):** the PBS (Pensión Básica Solidaria) and APS (Aporte Previsional Solidario) provide state support for those with low or no AFP savings, subject to a means test. Whether these are paid to Chileans permanently residing in Thailand is genuinely unclear — contact the Superintendencia de Pensiones (spensiones.cl) directly to confirm for your situation.

## FONASA / ISAPRE and Thai Health Insurance
Both FONASA (public health coverage) and ISAPRE (private health plans) are inaccessible from Thailand. For the Non-OA, OIC-approved Thai health insurance is mandatory — 40,000 THB outpatient + 400,000 THB inpatient minimum, two separate figures, not a combined total.
---
## Chile–Thailand Tax
Confirm the current status and coverage of any Chile–Thailand double taxation agreement with a contador auditor (CPA) experienced in international tax before emigrating — including how AFP pension income and investment income are treated once you're a Thai tax resident (180+ days per year) under Thailand's Por 161/2566 remittance rules (effective January 2024).
---
## Chilean Community in Thailand
Small but growing, concentrated in Bangkok and Chiang Mai — Chilean remote workers in software, consulting, and content, often serving USD-denominated clients, benefit from strong THB purchasing power. The Chilean Consulate Bangkok serves Chilean nationals in Thailand.
---
## Property for Chilean Nationals in Thailand
Foreign nationals cannot directly own Thai land (Chanote title). Options: condominiums (49% foreign-ownership quota per building, FET Certificate confirming funds wired from outside Thailand), leasehold land (typically structured in 30-year terms, sometimes as sequential renewals), or other legal structures. Nominee arrangements are illegal under the Thai Land Code. Use a certified Thai property lawyer.

Preguntas Frecuentes — Chilean Nationals Planning a Move to Thailand

Which criminal record certificate do I need, and can I get it online?

The Certificado de Antecedentes para Fines Particulares, from the Registro Civil. Apply online at miregistrocivil.cl (free, typically issued immediately to within a working day) — confirm the digital certificate is currently accepted by Thai Immigration first. You can also apply in person at any Registro Civil office, or via the Chilean Consulate Bangkok if you're already in Thailand.

Chile has been in the Hague Convention since 2016 — does that mean I just need an apostille?

Not yet, and this is a common misunderstanding. Chile's membership since 2016 is genuinely true. But Thailand — the destination country — only acceded to the Convention on 30 June 2026 and it doesn't take effect until 28 February 2027. The missing piece is on Thailand's side. Until then, your apostilled certificate also needs legalisation at the Royal Thai Embassy in Santiago.

What happens to my AFP pension when I move to Thailand?

Your AFP Cuenta de Capitalización Individual stays in your name — it's portable and doesn't disappear when you leave Chile. At retirement age, you initiate the pension process with your AFP and choose between renta vitalicia (lifetime annuity) or retiro programado (programmed withdrawal). International transfers to Thailand are typically available — confirm current arrangements with your AFP.

What is the difference between renta vitalicia and retiro programado?

Renta vitalicia: you purchase a lifetime annuity from a life insurer using your AFP balance — fixed monthly income for life, inflation-linked in UF. Retiro programado: you leave funds in the AFP and draw a monthly amount based on remaining balance and fund returns — payments fluctuate, and can decline if you live longer than projected. Both can be paid to an overseas account.

What is the correct bank seasoning period for the Non-OA?

3 months — 800,000 THB must be held in a Thai bank account for 3 months before the annual extension. This is the standard Thailand-wide rule and doesn't vary by nationality.

Does the LTR Wealthy Pensioner category get the 17% flat tax rate?

No — that's a common mix-up between two different LTR sub-categories. The 17% flat rate applies to LTR Highly-Skilled Professionals on Thai-sourced employment income. Wealthy Pensioners instead get a full exemption from Thai personal income tax on foreign-sourced income remitted to Thailand, under Royal Decree 743 — no cap on the amount remitted.

Is the Pilar Solidario (PBS/APS) paid to Chileans living abroad?

Genuinely unclear — the PBS and APS state welfare supplements are means-tested and residency-contingent. Contact the Superintendencia de Pensiones (spensiones.cl) directly to confirm for your specific situation rather than assuming either way.

How long can I stay in Thailand without a visa as a Chilean?

Chile has a bilateral tourism arrangement giving up to 90 days visa-free entry — longer than the roughly 60 days most nationalities get. Confirm the current duration with the Thai Embassy Santiago before travelling, since Thailand has separately discussed adjusting exemption periods generally.

What happens to my FONASA/ISAPRE coverage in Thailand?

Both FONASA and ISAPRE are inaccessible from Thailand. For the Non-OA, OIC-approved Thai health insurance is mandatory — 40,000 THB outpatient + 400,000 THB inpatient minimum, two separate figures, not a combined total.

Does Chile have a double tax agreement with Thailand?

Confirm the current status and coverage directly with a contador auditor experienced in international tax before emigrating — don't assume standard treatment applies to AFP pension income or investment income under Thailand's Por 161/2566 remittance rules.
