Ayutthaya is Thailand's former royal capital — a UNESCO World Heritage Site 80 km north of Bangkok. Who Chooses Ayutthaya For Long-Stay
Ayutthaya's resident expat community is small and specific in profile: Bangkok commuters who want lower rent and more space; retirees who prefer a provincial pace close to Bangkok's hospitals when needed; and a handful of remote workers and teachers drawn by the heritage setting and significantly lower cost of living.
It is not a lifestyle destination in the Chiang Mai or Phuket sense — there is no expat social infrastructure to speak of, no coworking scene, and the town closes early. For the right person, this is exactly the point: genuine quiet in a historic setting, 80 km from Bangkok.
Practicalities
Bangkok connection: train from Ayutthaya Station to Bangkok Hua Lamphong or Bang Sue (the new Bangkok Central Station): 1–1.5 hours, 15–215 THB depending on class. Multiple trains daily. This makes a Bangkok hospital visit or a major shopping trip entirely feasible as a day trip. Driving: 1.5 hours in light traffic via Highway 32 or the expressway.
Accommodation
Ayutthaya's accommodation stock is primarily guesthouses converted from shophouses and older Thai houses. Modern condos are limited. Healthcare
Ayutthaya Hospital (public) and Srinakharinwirot Hospital handle standard care. For international-standard private care, Bangkok (80 km, 1.5 hours) remains the practical option — Bumrungrad or Bangkok Hospital are reachable for a day appointment.
