Български Паспорт · Thailand Visa Guide 2026
Thailand Visa for Bulgarian Nationals: Non-OA Retirement, LTR, DTV — Criminal Record Certificate, Apostille, НОИ Pension Abroad, and Everything You Need
Bulgaria is now a complete Schengen member — air, sea, and land borders all joined as of January 2025. The Bulgarian Lev is fixed-pegged to the Euro, giving Euro-equivalent exchange-rate stability without formal Euro adoption. Bulgaria has been a Hague Apostille Convention member since 2001, though Thailand's own side of that process still has a step to go. This guide covers every step.
Често Задавани Въпроси — Bulgarian Nationals Planning a Move to Thailand
Which criminal record certificate do I need, and can I get it online?
The Свидетелство за съдимост, issued by the Министерство на правосъдието. Apply online via e-Gov Bulgaria (egov.bg / e.gov.bg) or epay.bg with an electronic signature — confirm the digital certificate is currently accepted by Thai Immigration first. You can also apply in person at the Бюро за съдимост at your Regional Court, or via the Bulgarian Embassy Bangkok if you're already in Thailand.
Bulgaria has been in the Hague Convention since 2001 — does that mean I just need an apostille?
Not yet, and this is a common misunderstanding. Bulgaria's membership since 2001 is genuinely true. But Thailand — the destination country — only acceded to the Convention on 30 June 2026 and it doesn't take effect until 28 February 2027. The missing piece is on Thailand's side. Until then, your apostilled certificate also needs legalisation at the Royal Thai Embassy in Sofia.
Is Bulgaria a full Schengen member now?
Yes — as of 1 January 2025. Bulgaria joined Schengen for air and sea travel on 31 March 2024, and land border checks were lifted on 1 January 2025, completing full membership. Bulgarian passport holders now travel across the Schengen Area with no border-type exception.
Does Bulgaria use the Euro?
No — Bulgaria uses the Bulgarian Lev (BGN). However, BGN is fixed-pegged to the Euro at 1.95583 BGN/EUR via the Currency Board, so BGN tracks EUR exactly against the Thai Baht. There's no effective currency risk between BGN and EUR, even though they remain formally separate currencies.
What is the correct bank seasoning period for the Non-OA?
3 months — THB 800,000 must be held in a Thai bank account for 3 months before the annual extension. This is the standard Thailand-wide rule and doesn't vary by nationality.
Does the LTR Wealthy Pensioner category get the 17% flat tax rate?
No — that's a common mix-up between two different LTR sub-categories. The 17% flat rate applies to LTR Highly-Skilled Professionals on Thai-sourced employment income. Wealthy Pensioners instead get a full exemption from Thai personal income tax on foreign-sourced income remitted to Thailand, under Royal Decree 743 — no cap on the amount remitted.
Is my НОИ pension enough for the Non-OA income requirement?
It depends on your career and pension age cohort — Bulgarian pension amounts vary considerably. Check your personal entitlement directly with НОИ. If your pension alone doesn't clear the roughly BGN 3,320/month threshold, the bank deposit route (800,000 THB, roughly BGN 40,900) is a straightforward alternative.
What happens to my НЗОК health coverage in Thailand?
НЗОК statutory health insurance ends when you're no longer a Bulgarian resident or contributor. For the Non-OA, OIC-approved Thai health insurance is mandatory — 40,000 THB outpatient + 400,000 THB inpatient minimum, two separate figures, not a combined total.
Does Bulgaria have a double tax agreement with Thailand?
Confirm the current status and coverage directly with a данъчен консултант experienced in international tax before emigrating — don't assume standard treatment applies to НОИ pension income or investment income under Thailand's Por 161/2566 remittance rules.
