Cost of Living in Phuket 2025 — The Real Monthly Budget
Phuket is Thailand''s most expensive destination for long-stay residents — but it is still significantly cheaper than Sydney, Melbourne, or Perth. The cost depends heavily on where in Phuket you live, whether you own or rent a vehicle, and how much of your lifestyle is Western-oriented versus local. Here are real 2025 figures.

THE BIG VARIABLE: WHERE IN PHUKET
Phuket is not one uniform city — it is an island with distinct cost zones:
TOURIST-ADJACENT AREAS (higher cost): Patong, Karon, Kata, Surin, Bangtao/Laguna. Beach access, more Western restaurants, higher rental prices, busier in peak season.
EXPAT RESIDENTIAL AREAS (mid-range): Rawai, Chalong, Nai Harn (southern Phuket). The preferred expat residential zone — quieter than the tourist strip, good local markets, beach access nearby. Best value-to-lifestyle ratio.
PHUKET TOWN AND NORTH (lower cost): Phuket Old Town, Thalang, Cherng Talay. More Thai-oriented, lower rents, further from the beaches most expats want.
MONTHLY COST BREAKDOWN (2025, SOLO ADULT)
ACCOMMODATION
Rawai/Chalong 1-bed condo (furnished): 12,000–20,000 THB/month
Bangtao/Laguna 1-bed (beach proximity): 18,000–32,000 THB/month
3-bed pool villa, outskirts (Chalong/Nai Harn): 40,000–80,000 THB/month
Phuket Old Town apartment (local market): 8,000–14,000 THB/month
FOOD
Local Thai food (wet markets, street stalls, cheap restaurants): 6,000–10,000 THB/month
Mixed local + Western restaurants: 15,000–25,000 THB/month
Primarily Western restaurants + imported groceries: 25,000–40,000 THB/month
Note: Phuket food costs are 20–30% higher than Chiang Mai or Pattaya due to tourist pricing on Western dining and imported goods.
TRANSPORT
Motorbike (owned, running costs): 1,500–3,000 THB/month
Car (owned, running costs): 5,000–9,000 THB/month
Grab/taxi only (feasible in main areas but expensive without a vehicle): 8,000–15,000 THB/month
Recommendation: a motorbike is effectively essential in Phuket — the island has no mass transit and distances between areas are significant.
UTILITIES (1-BED CONDO)
Electricity (aircon use, Thai rate for residential): 1,500–4,000 THB/month. Note: electricity in Phuket condos is sometimes charged at commercial rates by building management (double the PEA residential rate) — confirm before signing a lease.
Internet (fibre, 1 Gbps): 600–900 THB/month
Mobile (AIS/DTAC/TrueMove data plan): 300–600 THB/month
Water: 100–300 THB/month
HEALTH INSURANCE (Non-OA minimum, 60-year-old)
Thai local insurer: 20,000–45,000 THB/year (1,700–3,750 THB/month)
International expat policy: 80,000–200,000 THB/year (6,700–16,700 THB/month)
TOTAL MONTHLY BUDGETS
BUDGET (local lifestyle, Rawai, motorbike)
Rent 14,000 + food 12,000 + motorbike 2,000 + utilities 2,500 + insurance 2,500 + misc 4,000
= ~37,000 THB/month (~AUD 1,540)
COMFORTABLE (mid-range, Rawai/Chalong, car)
Rent 18,000 + food 20,000 + car 7,000 + utilities 3,500 + insurance 5,000 + social/entertainment 8,000 + misc 5,000

PREMIUM (Bangtao/Laguna area, Western lifestyle)
Rent 28,000 + food 32,000 + car 8,000 + utilities 4,500 + insurance 12,000 + entertainment/dining 15,000 + travel 8,000 + misc 6,000
= ~113,500 THB/month (~AUD 4,730)
PHUKET VS OTHER DESTINATIONS (MONTHLY, COMFORTABLE MID-RANGE)
Bangkok: 65,000–95,000 THB
Chiang Mai: 45,000–65,000 THB
Phuket: 60,000–90,000 THB
Hua Hin: 50,000–70,000 THB
Pattaya: 45,000–75,000 THB
Phuket is comparable to Bangkok mid-range — the beach premium is real but not as extreme as many assume. The main cost drivers vs Chiang Mai: higher food costs (tourist pricing), motorbike/car cost (no other transit), and a modest electricity premium in tourist areas.
WHAT YOU GET FOR THE MONEY
Phuket offers: Andaman Sea beaches, excellent healthcare (Bangkok Hospital Phuket), a large international school (BISP), direct international flights, diverse dining, and a cosmopolitan atmosphere — at roughly Bangkok prices. The beach access and international infrastructure are the premium you pay compared to Chiang Mai.
