How to Get Married in Thailand as a Foreigner — The Complete Process
Getting legally married in Thailand as a foreigner is straightforward but involves a specific document chain that many couples underestimate. The process takes 3–5 weeks from start to finish and requires a visit to your country''s embassy or consulate in Thailand before the District Office. Here is exactly how it works.

WHY THE PROCESS IS MORE INVOLVED THAN EXPECTED
Thailand''s marriage registration (at the Amphur, or District Office) requires proof that you are legally free to marry. Because Thailand has no access to foreign civil registries, it requires a document from your own government — an "affirmation of freedom to marry" (also called a statutory declaration or certificate of single status) — as the proof. This must be authenticated in a specific chain before the Amphur will accept it.
THE PROCESS IN STEPS
STEP 1: AFFIRMATION AT YOUR EMBASSY OR CONSULATE IN THAILAND
Visit your country''s embassy or consulate in Thailand and declare (in a sworn statement) that:
- You are not currently married
- You are legally free to marry in your home country
- You are the person named in your passport
AUSTRALIAN CITIZENS: The Australian Embassy in Bangkok issues an "Affirmation of Single Status" (officially: "Statutory Declaration as to Marital Status"). You book an appointment at the Embassy on Sathorn Road. Fee: approximately AUD 120–150. Bring your passport and any prior divorce certificate if applicable. Processing: same day.
The Australian Embassy does NOT verify your statement against Australian records — it is a statutory declaration, meaning you are signing under oath that the information is correct. Making a false statutory declaration is a criminal offence.
STEP 2: AUTHENTICATED TRANSLATION INTO THAI
The affirmation document is in English. It must be translated into Thai by a Thai-certified translator. The translation must then be certified by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) via the Consular Department.
The MFA legalisation process (authentication):
- Location: Consular Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Chaeng Watthana, Bangkok (or regional MFA offices)
- What they certify: that the document is genuine (they verify the embassy seal/signature, not the content)
- Processing time: same-day (express) or 3 business days (standard)
- Fee: approximately 200 THB per document + translation cost (600–1,500 THB depending on translator)
STEP 3: REGISTER AT THE AMPHUR (DISTRICT OFFICE)
With your MFA-authenticated affirmation and its certified translation, you and your Thai partner attend the local Amphur (District Office) to register the marriage.
Documents needed at Amphur:
- Your passport (original)
- Your MFA-authenticated affirmation + certified Thai translation
- Your Thai partner''s Thai ID card
- Your Thai partner''s house registration (tabien baan)
- If either party has been previously married: divorce certificate (court divorce decree) or death certificate of former spouse, also authenticated if foreign
The Amphur registers the marriage and issues a Thai marriage certificate (kor Ror 3) — a standard A4 document in Thai. This is your proof of legal marriage in Thailand.
Fee: approximately 50 THB.
STEP 4 (OPTIONAL): REGISTER THE MARRIAGE IN AUSTRALIA
If you want the Thai marriage recognised in Australia, you may register it with the Australian Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages (or use it as evidence of marriage in Australia — Australian law recognises foreign marriages automatically if they were valid where performed, which a Thai Amphur registration is). Most Australian authorities accept a Thai marriage certificate with a certified English translation.
HOW LONG DOES THE WHOLE PROCESS TAKE?
Embassy appointment (book in advance): 1–2 week wait for Australian Embassy appointments in peak periods
MFA authentication: 1–3 business days
Amphur registration: can be same-day once documents are ready
Total elapsed time from start to registration: typically 2–4 weeks
WHAT THE MARRIAGE ENABLES FOR VISA PURPOSES
Once you have the Thai marriage certificate, you can apply for:
Non-O (Non-Immigrant O) visa based on Thai spouse: this is the "marriage visa" — annual extensions based on 400,000 THB bank balance or 40,000 THB/month income, without requiring employment or retirement qualification.
The Thai marriage certificate is the primary document for the Non-O extension. It must be presented at every annual extension application.
IF YOUR THAI PARTNER IS THAI BUT LIVES ABROAD
For couples where both parties are currently outside Thailand: the affirmation process must be done at a Thai consulate in your home country OR you travel to Thailand to do the Amphur registration. The Amphur does not require you to be residents of Thailand — just to present in person.
