Retire in Krabi — Thailand''s Andaman Limestone Province
Krabi is among Thailand''s most scenically dramatic provinces — the limestone karsts rising from the Andaman Sea, the long-tail boats to offshore islands, the jungle-backed beaches. For retirees who want that landscape as their daily backdrop and can accept fewer Western amenities than Phuket offers, Krabi is a compelling option at a lower price point.

KRABI OVERVIEW
Krabi Province covers the area around Krabi Town and Ao Nang on the Andaman coast, approximately 150 km southeast of Phuket by road (or 80 km by ferry). It is significantly less developed than Phuket and Koh Samui — which is both its appeal and its limitation.
KEY AREAS FOR EXPATS
AO NANG
The main tourist and expat beach town. Beachfront, restaurants, supermarkets, dive shops, ferry access to Phi Phi and the islands. Most Western infrastructure is here. Not as developed as Phuket tourist areas — more intimate and less busy outside high season. Limited quality condo stock (most accommodation is guesthouses/resorts rather than the long-stay condo market Phuket or Pattaya has).
KRABI TOWN (MUEANG KRABI)
The provincial capital, 20 minutes from Ao Nang. More Thai-oriented, lower prices, the actual Immigration office and government services are here. Cheaper to live in than Ao Nang. Good local market and food scene.
KLONG MUANG / TUBKAEK (north of Ao Nang)
More remote, large resort properties. Quieter. Very limited local services — a car is essential.
MONTHLY COSTS IN KRABI (2025)
Accommodation:
1-bed, Ao Nang (furnished): 8,000–16,000 THB/month
1-bed, Krabi Town: 5,000–10,000 THB/month
Small house with garden, outskirts: 10,000–18,000 THB/month
Rental stock is thinner than Phuket — good long-stay condos are harder to find, and landlords do not always cater to expat requirements (washing machines, reliable water heaters, etc.).
Food: 10,000–18,000 THB/month
Transport: 2,000–4,000 THB/month (motorbike or car — no mass transit)
Utilities: 1,500–3,500 THB/month
TOTAL (comfortable mid-range): 30,000–55,000 THB/month (~AUD 1,250–2,290)
Krabi is moderately priced — between Chiang Mai and Phuket.
HEALTHCARE IN KRABI
Krabi Hospital (public provincial hospital): adequate for emergencies and basic treatment.
Krabi Nakharin International Hospital: the main private option, English-speaking. Adequate for routine expat care and minor procedures.
Serious conditions: Phuket (Bangkok Hospital Phuket) or Bangkok by air. Krabi Airport (KBV) has flights to Bangkok (~80 minutes, Bangkok Airways and Air Asia).
KRABI IMMIGRATION
Located in Krabi Town. Handles Non-OA and Non-O extensions, 90-day reports, re-entry permits. Small office. 90-day reports can be filed online.
THE ANDAMAN LIFESTYLE
Krabi offers: limestone karst scenery, island day trips (Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, Koh Hong), world-class rock climbing (Railay Beach is globally renowned), snorkelling and diving, kayaking. The pace is noticeably slower than Phuket — which its residents consider an advantage.
Rainfall pattern: the Andaman coast has the reverse wet season to the Gulf coast (opposite of Koh Samui). Peak rain: May–November on the Andaman side. Dry season: November–April — when Krabi is at its most spectacular. Some expats leave the province during the wet season for elsewhere in Asia.
LIMITATIONS COMPARED TO PHUKET
- Smaller expat community
- Less condo stock for long-stay
- Hospital one tier below Phuket''s Bangkok Hospital Phuket
- Fewer international restaurants and supermarkets
- Krabi Airport has limited international routes vs Phuket International
THE HONEST ASSESSMENT
Krabi is excellent for retirees who: want the Andaman limestone landscape as a permanent backdrop, are comfortable in a smaller, less-developed expat environment, and do not require frequent access to Bangkok-level healthcare.
Not ideal for: retirees with complex medical conditions (Phuket is better), those who need international school access for grandchildren (limited in Krabi), or those who want a large English-speaking expat social scene.
