Phuket vs Chiang Mai for Expats 2025: An Honest Comparison

COST OF LIVING
Chiang Mai is cheaper — significantly so. A comparable 1-bedroom condo with pool and gym in Nimman (Chiang Mai) costs 10,000–18,000 THB/month; the equivalent in Kata or Chalong (Phuket) runs 18,000–35,000 THB. Eating out is cheaper in Chiang Mai. Motorbike rental and day-to-day transport are similar. The gap widens if you rent a car — Phuket is more car-dependent, and car rental or ownership costs add up. Verdict: Chiang Mai wins on cost, usually by 20–40% for a comparable lifestyle.
WEATHER
Both are tropical, but very different profiles. Chiang Mai has three distinct seasons: cool and dry (November–February, pleasant, 15–25°C nights), hot season (March–May, 35–42°C, very uncomfortable), and wet season (June–October, afternoon rain, cooler). Smoke season (February–April) can produce severe air quality deterioration from agricultural burning — a serious health concern for those with respiratory conditions.
Phuket has two seasons: dry (November–April, sunny, 28–33°C) and monsoon (May–October, heavy rain, some days impassable). Typhoon impact is rare. The wet season on the west coast (Patong, Kata, Karon) is significant; the east coast (Chalong, Rawai) is drier in relative terms. Verdict: weather is a matter of preference, but Chiang Mai's smoke season is a genuine dealbreaker for many.
HEALTHCARE
Both have good private hospitals. Chiang Mai: Chiang Mai Ram Hospital and Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai are solid for routine and moderate care. For complex procedures, patients sometimes transfer to Bangkok. Phuket: Bangkok Hospital Phuket is the leading private facility — well-equipped and internationally accredited. Both cities are adequate for the vast majority of expat healthcare needs. Verdict: roughly comparable; Bangkok remains the gold standard for serious conditions.
INTERNET AND COWORKING
Chiang Mai has a deeper coworking culture and more established digital nomad infrastructure than Phuket. True and AIS fibre is widely available in both cities. Average download speeds in both: 200–400 Mbps on fibre. Chiang Mai's Nimman neighbourhood is purpose-built for the work-from-café lifestyle. Verdict: Chiang Mai for nomads and remote workers; Phuket is adequate but not optimised for it.
NIGHTLIFE AND SOCIAL SCENE
Phuket has a significantly more active nightlife scene — Patong's Bangla Road is one of Southeast Asia's most famous party strips. Chiang Mai has a more relaxed, diverse social scene — night markets, jazz bars, craft beer, the Saturday and Sunday Walking Street. Verdict: Phuket for nightlife; Chiang Mai for a broader community feel.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Choose Chiang Mai if: you are a remote worker, digital nomad, or budget-conscious retiree; you value community, cafes, and a slower pace; you do not need beach access. Choose Phuket if: beach lifestyle is non-negotiable; you travel internationally frequently (direct flights from Phuket are excellent); you want a more resort-style expat experience. Many long-term expats end up spending dry season in Phuket (November–April) and retreating to Chiang Mai or elsewhere during Phuket's wet season — a increasingly common split.
