Thailand Education Visa (ED Visa) 2025 — Complete Guide
The Thailand Education Visa (Non-Immigrant ED) allows foreigners to stay in Thailand long-term while enrolled in an approved educational institution. It is most commonly used for Thai language study, but also covers Muay Thai academies, yoga schools, cooking schools, and other approved programmes. Here is how it works in 2025.

WHAT THE ED VISA IS
The Non-Immigrant Type ED (Education) visa is issued to foreigners enrolled at an institution approved by the Thai Ministry of Education or another relevant authority. It allows a 1-year stay (renewable annually while enrolled), with an extension process at Immigration tied to your enrolment status.
It was historically used as a "long-stay" mechanism by those who did not qualify for other visa types. Thai Immigration has tightened oversight significantly since 2018, requiring genuine enrolment and regular attendance.
WHAT YOU CAN STUDY ON AN ED VISA
- Thai language schools (most common — any language school with Ministry of Education approval)
- Muay Thai academies (Ministry of Sport approved camps)
- Yoga teacher training schools (approved institutes)
- Cooking schools (approved institutions)
- University programmes (degree and certificate)
- Buddhist temples and meditation centres (approved)
- Massage therapy school (approved by Ministry of Public Health)
WHAT YOU CANNOT STUDY ON AN ED VISA
Any institution not approved by the relevant Thai ministry. The school must be on the approved list — not every language school or Muay Thai camp qualifies. Ask the institution for their letter of approval before enrolling.
THE PROCESS: GETTING AN ED VISA
STEP 1: ENROL WITH AN APPROVED INSTITUTION
The institution provides you with:
- Enrolment letter (confirming your enrolment and programme dates)
- School approval documentation
STEP 2: APPLY AT A THAI CONSULATE ABROAD
Take the enrolment letter + standard Non-Immigrant visa documents (passport, photos, application form, fee) to a Thai consulate outside Thailand. This gets you the initial Non-Immigrant ED stamp — typically 90 days.
STEP 3: ENTER THAILAND AND EXTEND AT IMMIGRATION
Once in Thailand, extend the visa annually at Immigration. You need:
- Enrolment certificate from the school (updated)
- Attendance record (schools must submit these — Immigration checks attendance)
- Passport
- Photos, TM7 form, 1,900 THB fee
ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS
This is the key change since 2018: Immigration requires proof of genuine attendance. Schools submit attendance records. Failure to maintain minimum attendance (typically 80%) can result in refusal of extension.
ED visa holders have sometimes been called to Immigration for "interviews" to assess whether their study is genuine. Being enrolled in a Thai language school and unable to demonstrate any Thai language ability is a red flag.
ANNUAL COST
School fees vary significantly:
Thai language school (1 year enrolment): 30,000–60,000 THB/year
Muay Thai camp (annual programme): 50,000–150,000 THB/year depending on camp
Yoga teacher training (200-hour programme): 30,000–80,000 THB
Extension fee: 1,900 THB/year at Immigration
COMPARING ED VISA TO OTHER OPTIONS
DTV vs ED visa: If you are a remote worker or have passive income, the DTV is significantly easier (no school requirement, no attendance, no Immigration extension each year — just re-enter every 180 days).
Non-OA vs ED visa: If you are 50+ and have funds, the Non-OA is more straightforward and not linked to a school''s continued operation.
ED visa strengths: useful if you genuinely want to learn Thai language or train in Muay Thai/yoga to a high level, and you are not eligible for DTV or Non-OA. The school ties you to a city (most language schools are in Bangkok or Chiang Mai).
APPROVED THAI LANGUAGE SCHOOLS (MAJOR, NOT EXHAUSTIVE)
Bangkok: AUA Language Center (Ministry of Education approved), Walen Thai (Ministry approved), UTL Language School
Chiang Mai: AUA Chiang Mai, Payap University Language Institute
Always verify current approval status with the school — approval can lapse.
COMMON ISSUES
- School loses Ministry of Education approval mid-enrolment: your extension application may be refused. Choose established schools.
- Attendance issues: genuinely attend classes. Immigration is more thorough than it was pre-2018.
- The ED visa does not allow you to work in Thailand. Taking on any Thai client or earning Thai income requires a separate work permit.
