Non-OA vs Non-O Thailand — The Difference Explained
The Non-OA and Non-O are Thailand''s two most commonly confused long-stay visa categories. Both are Non-Immigrant visas. Both are used by long-term residents. The difference is: the Non-OA is specifically the retirement visa, while the Non-O is the family-related visa. The financial requirements, qualifying criteria, and documents are different for each.

WHAT THEY HAVE IN COMMON
Both are Non-Immigrant visa categories (meaning: not tourist, not transit, substantive qualifying purpose).
Both are initially issued as 90-day visas by a Thai consulate or embassy.
Both are extended annually at the Immigration Bureau in Thailand.
Both require an annual maintenance of financial evidence (bank balance or income).
Both require TM30 (address registration), 90-day reporting, and re-entry permits for international travel.
THE NON-OA (NON-IMMIGRANT OA — RETIREMENT)
WHO IT IS FOR: Foreign nationals aged 50 and over who wish to reside in Thailand in retirement. There is no employment, family, or investment requirement — the visa is based on age and financial standing alone.
AGE REQUIREMENT: 50 years of age or older at time of application.
FINANCIAL REQUIREMENT:
- Bank balance: 800,000 THB in a Thai bank account, seasoned 3 months before first extension (2 months for subsequent extensions — check with your local office)
- Monthly income: 65,000 THB/month
- Combination: totalling 800,000 THB annually
HEALTH INSURANCE: Required at time of application and annually — minimum 40,000 THB outpatient / 40,000 THB inpatient coverage from a qualifying policy.
WORK RIGHTS: None. No work of any kind without a separate work permit.
THE NON-O (NON-IMMIGRANT O — FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS)
WHO IT IS FOR: Foreign nationals with a qualifying Thai family relationship:
(a) Married to a Thai national
(b) Parent of a Thai national child (even if not married to the Thai parent)
(c) Dependant of a Thai national (in some circumstances)
(d) Dependant of a Non-B or LTR holder (in some frameworks — varies)
AGE REQUIREMENT: None. There is no minimum age for a Non-O.
FINANCIAL REQUIREMENT:
- Bank balance: 400,000 THB (half the Non-OA requirement)
- Monthly income: 40,000 THB/month
- Combination: totalling 400,000 THB annually
The lower financial threshold is the Non-O''s key advantage over the Non-OA for financially constrained applicants.
HEALTH INSURANCE: NOT required for the Non-O (unlike the Non-OA). However, having health insurance is strongly advisable for practical reasons.
WORK RIGHTS: None (same as Non-OA). Separate work permit required to work.
DOCUMENT REQUIREMENTS COMPARISON
Non-OA unique documents:
- Age evidence (passport showing DOB — 50+)
- Health insurance policy
- Bank evidence: 800,000 THB
Non-O unique documents:
- Relationship evidence: marriage certificate + Thai spouse documents (marriage) OR child''s birth certificate + Thai child''s documents (parent)
- Bank evidence: 400,000 THB
Common to both:
- TM7 form, passport + copies, TM30 receipt, photos, 1,900 THB fee
CAN YOU SWITCH FROM NON-OA TO NON-O (OR VICE VERSA)?
Yes. If you are currently on a Non-OA (retirement) and you subsequently marry a Thai national, you can switch to a Non-O (marriage) basis at your next extension. This might be advantageous if:
- Your bank balance has dropped below 800,000 THB but stays above 400,000 THB
- You want to remove the health insurance requirement
The switch is done at the Immigration Bureau at extension time — you change the declared basis for the extension (and bring the marriage documents instead of the bank evidence for the Non-OA level).
GOING THE OTHER WAY (NON-O TO NON-OA): also possible, if you reach 50+ and want to shift from family-basis to retirement-basis. Less common reason to switch, but procedurally possible.
IS THE NON-OA OR NON-O BETTER?
For retirees over 50 without a Thai partner or child: Non-OA is the only option.
For those with a Thai spouse or child: Non-O is typically better — lower financial threshold, no health insurance requirement.
For those who are both 50+ AND have a Thai spouse: Non-O is usually the smarter choice due to lower financial maintenance requirements.
