Thailand Smart Visa Guide 2025: All 4 Categories, Who Qualifies, and How to Apply
The Thailand Smart Visa is the most prestigious work-and-stay option the country offers for skilled professionals and investors — a 4-year multiple-entry visa with bundled work authorisation, annual (not 90-day) reporting, and fast-track BOI processing. But the qualification bar is high, the category definitions matter, and the eligible industry list is specific. Here is the complete breakdown.

THE FOUR SMART VISA CATEGORIES
SMART T — TALENTED
For foreign technology experts with specialised skills in target industries. Requirements:
• Employment contract (minimum 1 year) with a Thai company in a target industry, OR a service contract with such a company
• Salary of at least 100,000 THB per month
• Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant field, OR minimum 5 years of relevant work experience in the target sector
• Employer must be BOI-promoted, operating in a target special economic zone, or a government-endorsed entity
SMART I — INVESTOR
For foreign investors committing capital to target industry companies. Requirements:
• Investment of at least 20,000,000 THB in a Thai company operating in a target industry, OR investment in Thai government-promoted innovation venture capital funds (e.g., funds promoted by the National Innovation Agency)
• No specific educational or employment requirement — the investment itself is the qualifier
SMART E — EXECUTIVE
For senior management in target industry companies. Requirements:
• Employment as an executive in a company in a target industry (CEO, C-suite, or senior director level)
• Salary of at least 200,000 THB per month
• Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant field, OR minimum 10 years of relevant experience
SMART S — STARTUP
For startup founders building innovative products within Thailand's ecosystem. Requirements:
• Accepted into and operating through a BOI-endorsed startup ecosystem (innovation hub, co-working space, or accelerator on the BOI approved list)
• Business plan for an innovative product or service to be developed in Thailand
• Minimum 600,000 THB in personal funds
TARGET INDUSTRIES
All Smart Visa categories require the employer, investee, or business to operate in one of Thailand's 12 target industries:
• Next-generation automotive
• Smart electronics
• Affluent medical and wellness tourism
• Agriculture and biotechnology
• Food processing
• Robotics for industry
• Aviation and logistics
• Biofuels and biochemical
• Digital technology
• Medical hub (devices, pharmaceuticals, clinical research)
• Defence
• Education and human resource development
If your industry sector is not on this list, the Smart Visa is not the right option. Consider the LTR visa (high-income remote workers, retirees) or the standard Non-B + work permit pathway.
WHAT THE SMART VISA PROVIDES
• 4-year visa, renewable: issued as an initial 4-year grant. Renewable for further 4-year terms while the qualifying criteria continue to be met.
• Multiple-entry: unlimited international travel and re-entry for the visa holder and accompanying family.
• Work authorisation included: the Smart Visa replaces the separate work permit for the qualifying role and employer — no additional Department of Employment application. This is one of the most valued benefits.
• Annual reporting: rather than 90-day address reports, Smart Visa holders report to Immigration annually — a substantial administrative relief.
• Family inclusion: spouse and children under 20 receive Smart Visa status alongside the primary holder, granting their own right to stay.
• Fast-track service: dedicated counters at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports; separate queue and processing at the BOI One Stop Service Centre.
• No work permit fee cycle: no annual work permit renewal at the Department of Employment.
THE APPLICATION PROCESS
Step 1: Confirm your qualifying category (T/I/E/S) and that your employer or business operates in a BOI-endorsed target industry.
Step 2: Gather documentation (see category requirements above plus general documents: passport, photographs, CV/degree certificates).
Step 3: Submit to the BOI Smart Visa unit — either online via the Smart Visa portal (smartvisa.boi.go.th) for pre-screening, or in person at the BOI One Stop Service Centre (ChamChuri Square, Bangkok, 9th floor).
Step 4: BOI screens and endorses. Target: 20 working days for a complete application. In practice, incomplete applications add 4–6 weeks.
Step 5: If already in Thailand on a valid visa, receive the Smart Visa extension/endorsement at BOI. If outside Thailand, BOI notifies a Thai consulate in your country to issue the visa stamp — you then travel to Thailand to activate.
Government fee: 10,000 THB (verify current fee at smartvisa.boi.go.th before applying).
SMART VISA vs LTR — WHICH TO CHOOSE
Both are BOI-administered premium visas for high-value foreign nationals. Key differences:
Smart Visa: tied to specific Thai employment or investment in a target industry. Work authorisation is bundled but tied to that employer and role. Changing employers requires a new application.
LTR: not tied to Thai employment. Covers remote workers (overseas income), high-net-worth retirees, and skilled professionals at any multinational or Thai company (not only target industries). Work authorisation under LTR Work-From-Thailand category covers overseas-sourced work only.
Decision guide:
• Senior exec or investor in Thai tech/biotech/automotive/digital company → Smart E or Smart I
• High-income remote worker or retiree → LTR
• Tech specialist working for a BOI company → Smart T
• Startup founder at a BOI-endorsed hub → Smart S
ANNUAL RENEWAL AND CHANGE OF EMPLOYER
Smart Visa holders who change employers must notify BOI within 15 days of the job change and apply to update the Smart Visa endorsement. Failing to notify may affect visa status. A new BOI evaluation is required for the new employer.
