Kanchanaburi
Kanchanaburi Province, home to the Bridge over the River Kwai and the Death Railway, is western Thailand's most historically significant destination. Beyond the WWII history, the province offers dramatic river valley scenery, national parks (Erawan Falls, Hellfire Pass), and one of Thailand's most distinctive long-stay settings: floating raft houses on the Kwai Noi and Kwai Yai rivers.

Kanchanaburi's expat community is small and characterised by two profiles: those who married into Thai families from the region, and a smaller group of nature-oriented long-stay residents who chose the river valley setting over the urban options. There is no digital nomad or coworking scene to speak of — this is genuinely off the beaten expat track.
The draw: 2.5 hours from Bangkok by car (Highway 338), national park access, low cost of living, and the floating raft house experience that is unique in Thailand.
Accommodation
Kanchanaburi Town: the main centre, close to the River Kwai Bridge tourist area. Guesthouses, apartments, small condos. 1BR apartment: 5,000–10,000 THB/month.
Floating raft houses (river): some are available on long-term lease. Distinct experience — bamboo and wood construction on the river, no road access, accessed by boat. Pricing varies widely: 6,000–15,000 THB/month for a liveable raft house.
River Kwai Road (raft house guesthouse corridor): touristy but river-facing. Long-term rates lower than in-season nightly prices.
Immigration
Kanchanaburi Immigration Office (Kanchanaburi town area): handles the province. Lower volume than coastal or urban offices. Annual Non-OA and Non-O extensions are routine. Less crowded, faster processing in most cases.
Healthcare
Kanchanaburi Hospital (public) covers emergency care. For private-standard care: Thanakarn Hospital (private, Kanchanaburi town) is the best local option. For specialist care or surgery: Bangkok (2.5 hours) is the standard.
Transport
Car is strongly recommended — the province is spread out and raft houses are only accessible by boat. Bus to Bangkok: 2.5 hours from Kanchanaburi Bus Station, 100–160 THB. Train to Bangkok (Thon Buri Station): historic but slow — 3–4 hours, scenic through the Death Railway section toward Nam Tok.
