Koh Phangan is known globally for its Full Moon Party, but the island has a parallel identity: a growing community of long-stay residents drawn by its wellness culture, low costs, and slower pace. The north and west of the island are entirely separate in character from Haad Rin, and home to a resident expat and digital nomad community that has been building steadily since the late 2010s.
Who Lives Long-Stay On Koh Phangan
Three profiles dominate the Koh Phangan long-stay community:
Wellness practitioners and students: the island has accumulated a critical mass of yoga studios, meditation retreats, Muay Thai gyms, and holistic health businesses. Koh Phangan is now genuinely considered a wellness destination, not just a party island.
Remote workers and DTV holders: the Srithanu and Ban Tai areas on the west coast have developed solid coworking infrastructure. The community is tight-knit — a different experience from the anonymous coworking hubs of Bangkok or Chiang Mai.
Long-stay retirees and lifestyle seekers: the quiet north coast (Ban Chaloklum, Ban Tai, Thong Sala town) attracts those who want island life without the costs of Koh Samui or the tourist density of Phuket.
Best Areas For Long-Stay
Srithanu / Haad Salad (northwest coast): the wellness hub of the island. Yoga studios, organic cafés, raw food restaurants, a walkable village feel. Several coworking options (WorkWork coworking is the main dedicated space). Bungalows and small houses dominate. 1BR house or bungalow: 8,000–18,000 THB/month.
Ban Tai / Zen Beach (west coast): slightly more affordable than Srithanu, still quiet, access to Thong Sala for shopping. Mix of bungalows and newer condos. 1BR: 8,000–15,000 THB/month.
Thong Sala: the island's main town. Ferry terminal, Big C supermarket, banks, government offices. Less scenic than the coast but more practical for shopping and admin. 1BR apartment above shops: 6,000–12,000 THB/month.
Haad Rin (southeast): Full Moon Party area. Not suitable for quiet long-stay.
Immigration
Koh Phangan does not have its own Immigration office. All visa extensions and 90-day reporting require a visit to Koh Samui Immigration (Na Thon, Koh Samui) — accessible by ferry (approximately 1 hour from Thong Sala). Most long-stay residents budget a half-day for the Immigration run. Some 90-day reports can be filed online or by post.
Healthcare
Koh Phangan has two main hospitals: Koh Phangan Hospital (public, Thong Sala) and Bangkok Hospital Koh Phangan (small private clinic outpost). For anything beyond basic outpatient care, Koh Samui is the standard referral — Bangkok Hospital Samui is 1 hour away by ferry.
For serious conditions, Bangkok is the ultimate referral point.
Transport
Motorbike is essential — most roads are hilly and distances between coasts are significant. Rental: 2,500–4,000 THB/month. Car rental is available but less common. Songthaews cover major routes for 100–200 THB flat rate.
Koh Phangan does not have an airport. Access is by ferry from Surat Thani (2 hours, THB 300–400) or from Koh Samui (30–60 minutes, multiple daily ferries).
Cost Of Living (August 2026 Estimates)
Studio/1BR, town centre: around 24,500 THB/month (bungalow rates vary considerably by area and season)
Local meal: 100–300 THB; Western dining: around 200–300 THB/person
Koh Phangan remains a genuinely low-cost long-stay base relative to Phuket or Samui, though the ferry requirement for Immigration visits is a real logistical cost. Total-budget estimates from current sources disagree by a wide margin for Koh Phangan specifically, and no dated grocery-total figure is available — ask us for a current, fuller comparison rather than rely on a single published number.
