Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat)
Nakhon Ratchasima — universally called Korat — is Thailand's fourth-largest city and the traditional gateway to the northeast. It sits 260 km northeast of Bangkok and serves as the logistics, industrial, and commercial hub for the lower Isaan region. Its expat community is smaller than Chiang Mai or Pattaya but well-established, with a particularly strong Thai-family residential base.
Who Lives In Korat Long-Term
Korat's foreign resident population includes: Thai-family residents (Non-O marriage/family holders), industrial zone employees (the city has significant industrial estates with international companies), English teachers at the city's schools and Suranaree University of Technology, and retirees who chose it for its proximity to Bangkok and low costs.
The city is genuinely Thai in character — the expat community is integrated into Thai life rather than concentrated in an expat bubble, unlike some coastal destinations.
Industrial Zone Employment
Korat's industrial estates (particularly Nakhon Ratchasima Industrial Estate) attract international manufacturing and logistics companies. Foreign employees of these companies follow the standard Non-B + work permit route. For BOI-promoted companies in the estates, the BOI work permit process may apply.
Accommodation
Korat's accommodation market is priced for Thai professionals rather than expats — good value by any measure.
City centre (near Terminal 21 Korat): 1BR condo: 6,000–12,000 THB/month.
Near SUT campus: student-area pricing. Studio/1BR: 4,000–9,000 THB/month.
House rental (suburbs): 2–3BR house: 8,000–16,000 THB/month.
Immigration
Nakhon Ratchasima Immigration Office: serves Korat Province. Handles the standard mix of Non-OA, Non-O, Non-B extensions, and 90-day reporting. Well-practised with industrial zone work permit cases and Thai-family Non-O extensions.
Healthcare
• Bangkok Hospital Nakhon Ratchasima: part of the Bangkok Hospital network. Best option for expat use — English-speaking, direct billing. Located on Mittraphap Road.
• Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital: large public hospital, longest established in the region.
• For specialist care: Bangkok is 2.5 hours by car (Motorway 6) — a realistic day trip.
Transport
No BTS or MRT. Car or motorbike recommended. Korat to Bangkok: Highway 2 to Motorway 6 — 2.5–3 hours. Bus: 3–4 hours, 200–400 THB. Korat does not have a commercial airport — Bangkok is the nearest international gateway.
