What's changing
Immigration specialists refreshed guidance in June 2026 on when Thailand requires a pre-approved tourist visa versus visa-exempt entry at the border. The distinction turns on nationality, purpose, and stay length — not on whether you already booked flights.
Exempt entry is for short tourism. A Single Entry Tourist (SET) or Multiple Entry Tourist (MET) visa from an Australian Thai consulate is the right tool for longer visits, repeat entries, or when your travel history triggers airline boarding checks. Neither route authorises work for a Thai employer.
Who is affected
Holiday under ~30 days with onward travel proof — exempt entry may suffice (verify current MFA list for Australian passports).
6–12 week trips, multi-leg itineraries, or visiting family long-term — tourist visa usually safer than stacking exempt entries.
Remote workers or retirees — tourist/exempt is the wrong category; DTV or retirement from the start.
